In its brief history, social media has become a very influential force to be reckoned with especially by corporations and governments. Loud and opinionated, its voice can evoke a battle cry for or against a brand, product or public figure. It is in such times of condemnation or celebration that the differences in tone and objectivity between the new and traditional media are most apparent. What so far is our record - as communications and PR professionals - for properly addressing the social media world either when managing a crisis or broadcasting an announcement? What sets social media apart from traditional media? And finally, what are the new rules of engagement?

A panel of bloggers, 'traditional' journalists and new media strategists will share insights into better navigating social media and explore issues such as:

  • Is the work of bloggers and traditional media journalists complementary or at odds with one another?
  • Are the long-standing, professional standards bending with the emergence of social media?
  • What's an acceptable way either to quell negative coverage and criticism in the blogosphere or even set the record straight?
  • What's the future of print and online media?

Confirmed panelists:

  • Don Clark, Reporter, The Wall Street Journal
  • Jon Fortt, Reporter/Blogger, Fortune
  • Sam Diaz, Formerly with the Washington Post and San Jose Mercury News
  • Dean Takahashi, Blogger, VentureBeat,
